Business
The hands-on learning offered in business courses enhances student involvement and motivation because students see how such skills as reading, English, and math can be applied to "real world" situations.

The mission of Business Education in Saint Paul Public Schools is to empower and prepare students to become responsible citizens, capable of making informed economic decisions that will benefit their personal and professional lives.

Business Education provides instruction for and about business.  Students learn to:

  • function as economically literate citizens
  • aspire to higher level of employability
  • access post-secondary opportunities in business programs
  • communicate technologically

Business Education embeds the NBEA (National Business Education Association) standards in all courses to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for students to access post-secondary opportunities, as well as be successful in the workforce.  Articulation agreements currently exist with local colleges for specific courses as students demonstrate identified competencies.

Academy of Finance (AOF)

Established in 1982, the Academy of Finance introduces students to the broad career opportunities in the financial services industry and, in the process, equips them to make sound choices for the future.  A member program of National Academy Foundation, the Academy of Finance operates as a "school within a school" and is in high schools nationwide.

The Business Department will again be recruiting juniors who are interested in business occupations and would like to participate in a summer 2010 paid internship. Curriculum requires that students register for one semester of Accounting.  Keyboarding is highly recommended.  See Ms. Rosenow, Room #1407.

Accounting

Have you ever or your student thought about an Accounting career?  There are more graduates in accounting than any other major. (National Association of Colleges & Employers, 2005 Survey.) Take a moment to look at the classified section of most newspapers and you'll  find many ads for prospective employees with accounting knowledge.  Accounting offers a broad range of job opportunities as well as above salaries.  For students of accounting who aspire to a well-paid and satisfying career, public accounting salaries range from $35-175,000; corporations pay even more.  Get your introduction to accounting while you're in high school!

Keep in mind that the course offerings in the Business Department are most beneficial to students because they will develop skills essential for success in the business world.
