Meets, Order of Events, Scoring

Como Park High School is a member of the St.Paul City Conference. All conference meet schedules, including those for swimming, can be found online at www.stpaulathletics.org. The swim teams also participate in non-conference invitational or dual meets. Conference meets are almost always held at Humboldt School, 30 E. Humboldt, on Saint Paul’s west side (map available at conference website). Dual and tri meets generally last 1 to 1½ hours, depending on whether there are junior varsity heats and how many (if any) divers are competing. Multi-team meets last far longer, since there are multiple heats of every event.

In dual meets, Como will be assigned either the three even numbered lanes or the three odd numbered lanes for varsity heats. Up to three swimmers or three relay teams may be entered in each race. In general, swimmers with the fastest seed times will be assigned to the middle lanes and those with slower seed times will be assigned outer lanes. Each swimmer may compete in a maximum of two individual events and two relay events or one individual event and three relay events.

Each meet follows this order of events:

            200 Medley Relay (50 back, 50 breast, 50 fly, 50 free)

            200 Freestyle

            200 Individual Medley (50 fly, 50 back, 50 breast, 50 free)

            50 Free

Diving (if any—also, many large meets will hold this event ahead of the races)

            [Intermission]

100 Butterfly

            100 Freestyle

            500 Freestyle

            200 Freestyle Relay (4 x 50)

            100 Backstroke

            100 Breaststroke

            400 Freestyle Relay (4 x 100)

The Saint Paul City Conference Preview meet that kicks off the season is unlike other meets. It consists entirely of relays, most of which are seldom seen. The events follow this order:

200 Medley Relay (50 back, 50 breast, 50 fly, 50 free)

850 Freestyle Medley (50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free)

300 Breast/Fly Relay (50 breast, 100 fly, 100 breast, 50 fly)

200 Backstroke Relay (4 X 50 back)

400 Freestyle Relay (4 X 100 free)

Diving Relay

400 Medley Relay (100 back, 100 breast, 100 fly, 100 free)

200 Freestyle Relay (4 X 50 free)

400 Individual Medley Relay (4 X 100 IM, each swimming 25 fly, 25 back, 25 breast, 25 free)

Most dual meets score individual races 6-4-3-2-1 and relays 8-4-2. First place in an individual race, therefore, is worth 6 points, second is worth 4, and so on. First place in a relay is worth 8 points, second is worth 4, and third is worth 2. Only varsity heats contribute to team scoring. Multi-team meets generally (but not always) award points out to the top 16 places in both individual and relay events.
